Kethawil Pembengguk (Many Children)
A preschool program which meets once a week. It is an activity program which includes making a healthy meal that is shared by all present. We can have the session inside during adverse weather or often we go bush or to the river and cook on a camp fire.
We have cultural activities that are based on a theme that we follow for the year. Some of those have been “Through My Eyes”, “Following the Footprints” and the “Aboriginal Seasons”. We try to incorporate as much Aboriginal language and culture as we can, through this we find the children become more engaged and identify with their Aboriginality.
Tyipen Kwe (Happy Friends)
This is an after school program for primary school aged children. The focus of Program content would consist of play and craft activities, with a strong emphasis on culture, family connectedness and strengthening Community links.
We are hoping to develop the children’s knowledge of art and storytelling. We have input from the Elders to teach the meanings of symbols and tradition so that the children can then tell their own stories in art. Dance and song are also be incorporated and the children perform at significant public events. We try to incorporate as much Aboriginal language and culture as we can, through this the children become more engaged and identify with their Aboriginality.
Every year we present an entry into the Kerang Book Parade. We focus on a Dreaming story and the children dress in character costumes. A book is produced of the story, the children illustrate the book and then we add photos of the book parade, so they become part of the story. Each child is presented with a copy at the end of the year.
Elders are the core of our program, we are in constant consultation with them as to our content and their wisdom and advice is what makes our program strong.
